For the first time, a foreign business activities in Vietnam is prosecuted for acts of using computer software illegally. July 18/12, company shares Information, Lac Viet and Microsoft have filed lawsuits international co., LTD Gold Long John Dong Nai, a Taiwanese company producing canvas for big brands like NIKE, ADIDAS, CONVERSE, with accused of using unlicensed software.

On 17/06/2013, during the surprise inspection by inspectors of the Ministry of culture, sports and tourism in collaboration with Room 4/C50 under the General police department crime prevention (Ministry of Public security) carried out at the headquarters of Gold Long John, authorities have discovered 69 computer are using illegal software of Lac Viet and Microsoft. Estimated worth of this software up to 1 billion (equivalent to $ 45,000). Representatives of Gold Long John Dong Nai signed the minutes of the inspector admitted violation of copyright.

He Tarun Sawney, director in charge of anti-piracy in Asia - pacific software alliance BSA, said: “putting the service, copyright infringement software to court already popular in many countries in the region, which helps to minimize the violations. In Vietnam, with the event beginning, we expect that the court will become the effective tool to bring the rate of pirated software at 70%.”

He Ha Body, General director of The company, Lac Viet, said that the company has noticed violations from long ago, made the prompt measures, negotiate, even an extension of time for Gold Long John to solve the problem. However, the company violated no feedback. Therefore, after the inspection, Vietnam, and Microsoft decided to conduct measures on high alert over by sue in Court people, Dong Nai province.

He personally expressed: “We suffered many losses from acts of using unlicensed software of the business such as Gold Long John, hope will be compensated satisfactorily. Through this incident, we want to send a clear message to the business that the legal rights of, we will be protected by law.”

Vietnam has reduced the rate of pirated software from 92% in 2004 down to 81% in 2011, indicating progress in the fight against piracy. However, to reach the average level of 60% as other countries in the region, Vietnam is still many challenges to overcome.
